Three Reading Quotes

I know lady who reads constantly, one book after another. What she reads never gives her pause, raises questions or makes her wonder, because the books she reads are as predictable and unsatisfying as a fast-food chain ‘meal’. I would recommend that no one ever reads more than two such books in a lifetime. Here are three quotes about what reading books should be for…So many books...

“The book to read is not the one that thinks for you, but the one which makes you think.”

Harper Lee

“Reading furnishes the mind only with materials for knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.”

“I suggest that the only books that influence us are those for which we are ready, and which have gone a little further down our particular path than we have yet got ourselves,”

E M Forster

“Two Cheers For Democracy”

There’s nothing wrong with a little light reading – sometimes it just hits the spot, but, like junk food, I think it should be limited to ‘sometimes’. The tidy books are on my bookshelf (one of them), and the other three are part of the book pile in my daughter and her partner’s new house – they don’t have shelves to put them in (yet). It’s like a sculpture at the top of the stairs, chock full of  the kind of reading that helps you think.
