Friday Poem: Fairy Tale

It was a most extraordinary thing;
A prince had fallen
In love with a tattercoat,
Some rags-and-feathers urchin,
Smeared with soot:
A most unsuitable match,
Her face half-hidden –
And yet some mystery
Of grace in her,
Some sweetness he perceives,
Has robbed his heart:
Against all sense
He kisses her
And instantly she is transformed;
Revealed in her true nature,
A princess of the finest type,
So pure and lovely.

Love changes things.

And yet I cannot help but think
How sweet it would have been
If he’d turned out to be
A common swineherd.Love beads
